In a bad economy lots of people suffer and I am not here to deny that. Nor am I a person that is pointing fingers at people that cannot take care of their animals. I am however pointing out that in a bad economy large animals tend to get the raw end of the deal. People are abandoning large animals by the hundreds. With their need for specialized care and lots and lots of food it only stands to reason.
This is a pony that we rescued from such a situation. Her usefulness seemingly gone due to her age, she was not taken care of, as evidenced by her hooves. We took her in and our amazing Farrier went to work on her. Several hours later her hooves looked a little more normal. Needless to say neglect like this is not taken care of in one appointment. She will be alright in time, and although she cannot be used for pony rides or pony parties, we did find a great place for her to live out her life in peace. So my working ponies don't only pay for their own care, they share their earnings with others too...a good thing for this sweet mare!!
